Baby boomers are retiring in droves, and Millennials are taking their places. New churches are being built to accommodate Catholics who have moved west and south. Pews in northeastern and midwestern 19th and 20th century churches are filled with fewer, older, and more diverse parishioners. Many identify as "spiritual, but not religious" or classify themselves as "none" (as in, no religious affiliation.) Who are today's and tomorrow's Catholics? How does a Catholic publisher reach this ever-changing market? What demographic trends should Catholic publishers be preparing for? John Allen, well-known Catholic journalist and commentator, will take us through the changing demographics in the Church, and offer his insights into the future and its impact on Catholic publishing.

John Thavis is a journalist, author and speaker specializing in Vatican and religious affairs. He is known in the trade as a “Vaticanista,” having covered Vatican events for 35 years. He was Rome bureau chief for Catholic News Service and served three years as president of the Association of International Journalists Accredited to the Vatican -- the only American ever elected to that position. He has won numerous journalistic awards and has lectured on Vatican affairs in the United States and Europe. In 2013 his book, “The Vatican Diaries: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at the Power, Personalities, and Politics at the Heart of the Catholic Church” became a New York Times bestseller. His second book, “The Vatican Prophecies: Investigating Supernatural Signs, Apparitions and Miracles in the Modern Age” was published by Viking in 2015.
